If you like low maintenance plants, then alyssum might just be your ticket! Alyssum is a fan of prolonged dry periods so be sure to water regularly, especially if considering many utilize it in containers on borders where plants tend to dry out faster. Alyssum is not a plant requiring loads of feed so a pre-applied granular slow release fertilizer along with a periodic dose of a well balanced complete liquid feed should suffice. As blooms begin to fade, don’t be afraid to cut the plant back. They will re-bloom quickly and this will help keep your alyssum looking tidy.Choose a spot for your Alyssum Wonderland plants that has light but not overly rich soil, where they will receive either full sun or partial shade. The darkest colors will fade less in partial shade, but sweet alyssums bloom best in full sun. Don’t choose an area where water stands on the soil, or the plants’ roots may rot. Although they aren’t picky about pH, blue varieties show the best color in soil with a lower pH. Attractive to bees and butterflies, sweet alyssums may help lure pollinators into vegetable gardens. They can also be used as ground covers for taller plants in containers.A compact form of sweet alyssum (Lobularia maritima), with plants that reach 4 inches in height and spread to 10 inches, the Wonderland series features an array of colors from white through copper red. With tiny and sweet-scented four-petalled flowers produced in profusion, sweet alyssums — sometimes also known as sweet Alice — are technically hardy annuals. They self sow heavily enough to appear perennial in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 7 through 10.Western Garden Book” warns that self-sown sweet alyssums usually grow taller with tinier and less intensely colored blooms than the original plants. One month after the plants begin to bloom for the first time, cut them back by one-half to encourage them to branch out more and make new flowers. If sown in spring, your sweet alyssums may stop blooming during the hottest months of summer, but will resume in the fall. In areas with cool summers and frost-free winters, they can flower almost year-round by constantly dropping new seed. Wonderland Deep Rose Alyssum is a dense herbaceous annual with a trailing habit of growth, eventually spilling over the edges of hanging baskets and containers. It brings an extremely fine and delicate texture to the garden composition and should be used to full effect.
